Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Lab

PEARL is an internationally recognized research lab at Queen’s University that uses paleolimnological techniques to study a wide range of environmental issues. Recent projects have involved lake acidification and eutrophication, fisheries declines, metals and toxic pollution, environmental change in the Arctic, and drought cycles in western Canada.

Institute for the Environment

The Royal Military College’s Institute for the Environment is a multidisciplinary team investigating and researching a wide variety of environmental problems and issues in support of federal government agencies. Past activities include conducting site assessments, remediation, monitoring, and developing new environmental standards and fuel cell technology. The Institute also offers a full program of environmental training through short courses, distance education, and/or as part of undergraduate or graduate programs.

Royal Military College

RMC is the only federal institution in Canada with degree-granting power. RMC was the first college in Canada to train engineers and is renowned for the high calibre of its engineering curriculum in particular. The College offers undergraduate and degree programs in chemistry, physics, chemical and materials engineering, chemical and material science, civil engineering, environmental engineering and environmental science. The College also offers undergraduate and master’s degrees in business administration.

BIOCAP Canada Foundation

Queen’s University was the birthplace of the BIOCAP Canada Foundation, an internationally-recognized national research foundation that helped lay the groundwork for the transformation to a sustainable bioeconomy in Canada. For ten years, BIOCAP provided an innovative and effective model for building partnerships and integrating research insights with science and investment policy. While the organization officially closed in 2008, universities, businesses and governments across the country continue to build on BIOCAP’s legacy.

Loyalist College

Located in nearby Belleville, Ontario, Loyalist College offers environment technician and technologist training (with emphasis on bioremediation), leading-edge environmental laboratory facilities, and training in biotechnology and chemical engineering. The College also maintains a unique, state-of-the-art Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction Laboratory for the extraction of high- purity natural products without the use of petrochemical solvents.

St. Lawrence College

Top-rated St. Lawrence College offers training in a number of health science fields, including biotechnology, medical laboratory science and health information management.

A top-rated community college that provides training in environmental testing and sustainable energy systems. The College is home to Energy House, an off-grid research, demonstration and training facility for alternative energy technologies and energy conservation.
